Cape Town: I went out with a mission – to find out what other people would do if they needed or wanted to make some more money.
Either more than what they are currently earning, or just a bit extra for a side hustle, or to pay off debt.

So – this is what other ladies said they would do if they wanted to make some extra money in their spare time.

  1. Baby-sitting
  2. Baking
  3. Make jams and preserves and sell them
  4. Walking d0gs
  5. Pet sitting
  6. Doing admin for small companies
  7. Online surveys
  8. Sell old clothes
  9. Sell Avon, Honey, Tupperware, Amware, Justine, Acorn Kids products
  10. Offer foot massages (she is qualified!)
  11. Do small sewing jobs and clothing alterations
  12. Do nail art for people
  13. Buy and sell second hand clothing
  14. Become a virtual assistant
  15. Learn a skill or use your talents: make-up and do this for matric dances, weddings, photo shoots
  16. House sit

Two things that I believe are great ways to make yourself some additional income, DID NOT come up at all!

They are:

*Forex trading
*Having your own blog

For me, to make REAL money in forex trading, you need to have money to begin with.
Yes, start off with a small account and learn to trade, but if you want to make the big bucks, you do need to have a good amount to invest. And to be safe, if you are starting out, you actually should set up at least one account to auto-trade.

But a second way to make money from home is to start a blog. Yes yes, in South Africa, a lot of people seem to think it’s only for writers, or people who want to journal, or people who just want to do something. But if you did not know, you can actually make money from having a blog. And it’s much easier to set up then you think.

How do you make money with a blog?

Firstly lets look at what a blog is.

A blog is a simply platform on the the www where you create ‘posts’ or mini-stories about a certain topic that other people can read.

But – nothing comes without a bit of effort so you will need to put effort in to see results.

The trick with having a successful blog is to blog about something you absolutely love. People can tell the difference between a genuinely passionate person, and a fake. Be genuine and it will be fun. Fun brings you readers. Readers become your target market.

Your blog will attract the kind of person who is interested in the same type of thing and who will follow you – and that is what you want.

At the bottom of this post you will find a fab download with some ideas of blog niche ideas as well as a couple of post ideas to get your mind ticking away.

So while you are thinking about what your blog is going to be about, carry on reading to see five different ways that you are actually able to make money from your blog.

Ready? Let’s go!

1. Affiliate Marketing

The first way that you can make money is by becoming an affiliate marketer!

This is a fun one – you join up with companies relevant to your specific niche and promote their products to your blogging audience.
The company will send you a special link and then you earn a commission every time someone purchases something through your special link!

How do you find these companies? Google of course.

Let’s say your niche is puppies. Go to google and type in ‘affiliate marketing + puppies’ and you will get a number of options.

You would then click through from these links and apply with these companies to become an affiliate marketer for them. This is done usually by completing an online form and it doesn’t cost you anything.

Read the rules of the affiliate company and once you have submitted your request to join their affiliate marketing team, it usually takes less than 24 hours for you to get a response.
Remember, they want you to sell their products for them. They make money – you make money. It is a win-win situation.

Oh yes, and don’t forget to join Amazon’s amazing affiliate programme too. The great thing about Amazon is that you will get commission on EVERYTHING that a person puts into their basket, not only the item that you are promoting.

So for example, if you are promoting a chew toy for puppies, and someone clicks on your link and buys a dog basket, lead and a food bowl as well as your chew toy, you will get the commission on all of these items. Fantastic!

2. Create Your Own Products

If you have any special skills or passions (think: baking, sewing, make-up, handyman etc) – then you can create a course or an e-book for example and sell this online.

The great thing about creating your own products is that this can generate a fantastic passive income for you. Put in the hours and hard-work now to create a fantastic product and have it generate money for you from today onwards.

You can also put it out there for other people to sell for you and they earn an affiliate commission! See how its all working?

Think of these ideas:

1. Online craft classes
2. E-books or courses
3. Get abs easily in 30 days
4. Super nutrious smoothies
5. How to grow your own veggie garden
6. Learn to play guitar
7. How to set up a weekly/ monthly food budget
8. Bird-watching Course
9. Learn to work with chocolate
10. How to ‘baby-proof’ your house

These are just some ideas of products and courses you can create, sell them online without every leaving your home if you want, and generate yourself an income.

3. Ads

Ads are a passive way for you to make money but you do need to have people coming to your blog to earn money from this so generating an income this way will take a bit longer, depending again on how much time and effort you put into your blog.

You can easily set up banners and advertisements and you maintain the control of this; but as I said, you do need quite a bit of traffic to make money this way.

Once you are getting a few thousand visitors (numbers vary per company), you can apply to the following ad companies:

1. Mediavine
2. Google Ads
3. Sovrn
4. AdThrive

4. Sponsored Posts

Many companies will pay bloggers to write posts about their products or services – this also requires a large number of people coming to your blog.

Once your traffic is growing, this is another way that you can make money with your blog.

5. Services

Here you can offer out your services and get paid to do so. You will set up your blog, gain traffic and grow your email list and then you can start offering out your services, most likely in addition to one or more of the above income earners.

Here are a five suggestions but this list is endless:

  1. Become a VA (virtual assistant)
  2. Online coach
  3. Teach English as a foreign language
  4. Virtual Party Planner
  5. Social Media Management

So as you can see there is more than one way to make money from your blog.

You might not know right now what the best way for you will be – or something might have jumped right out and is screaming at you! I suggest that you grab your partner or best friend and have a serious brain-storming session. See what comes out of it. What gets your creative juices flowing?

But wait….you actually need a blog to do all of the above but you don’t have one yet.

Not to worry – I will help you. As I am a self-proclaimed technophobe, I have set up seriously simple instructions on how to do this. and if I can do it, trust me, you can do it.

Get going and set up that blog and break free from the 9 to 5.

Happy Creating – you can do it!
